Are text boxes available in iPhoto 9.6.1?

I have not yet upgraded to El Capitan. I'm saving for a new MacBook Pro. I made a picture book last yer, but could not fins out how to insert text boxes. I want to make a Family History book so will need to put some text with the pictures.

MacBook Pro (13-inch Mid 2009), OS X Yosemite (10.10.3)

First, let me notify you that as of April 1 of this year iPhoto is no longer able to order books or any other print products from Apple's Print Products store. To get a book printed from iPhoto one will have to create a PDF file of the book and use an online book printing site like PrestoPhotos. They advertise that they can create books based on the Photos or iPhotos pdf file that gets created. The sizes and cover types are compared here: Product Chart.

That being said, iPhoto does have layouts that allow text boxes below or next to photos photos depending on the theme or a text page itself. Select a page and use the Layout button to select the layout with text that meets your needs. j

The new Photos app also has similar layouts but not the same as iPhoto's. So if you plan on building your book with iPhoto and then convert it to Photos to order you may lose much of the work you put in to it. Either build in iPhoto and buy online with a site that can handle iPhoto's pdf files. OR, upgrade to El Capitan and PHotos and build and order the book there.

Thanks Leonie - I see that you are very experienced.

I have not used Photo yet. I still have everything in iPhoto. and today just learned that Apple no longer prints books from iPhoto, so that make your reply all the more useful.

Some of my text is going to need more room than what I see in Photo. Can the layouts be customized? Is it possible to have a full page of text?

I've been reading other similar discussions and might need to try another option. Or even do it in Pages and then convert to pdf and have it printed.

I liked the quality of the book I did in iPhoto. I also did a book in MyPublisher last year, but this year the program keeps crashing and I'm frustrated with hours on tech support.

I'll keep looking.

You can have your iPhoto books printed by Presto Photo.

There are a few posts in these forums by Presto Meghan, explaining how to format the books, for example: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/7597250?answerId=30360192022#30360192022

You cannot customize the layouts, but you can pick from many different page layouts, and you can have full text pages as well:

[This might be a repetition - I started a reply, then lost it] Thanks for all of your suggestions! I'm going to try Photo and I've emailed Presto asking if there's a quality difference in a pdf from iPhoto or one created with a word processing program. I have more decisions to make, but you've helped me narrow them down.
